Facebook (oh god no)
March 11th, 2007 by AndrewYeah, yeah, Facebook is lame, a tremendous way of diverting people’s time away from anything of any consequence, a massive data-mine for greedy marketers, and lets people live in a fantasy world of e-coolness and pseudo-friends.
But love it or hate it (and I know Andy hates it), the important thing here is that if you think of it as a tool, you suddenly have an avenue for reaching an unprecedented number of people. Students, at that, who might actually still believe in our ability to affect change in the world. Sure, most of the people are far more interested in stalking girls or looking at their friends’ pictures of booze bottles, but there have got to be a few people who are legitimately interested in making things better.
Obviously you’ve got to be proactive about it. You can’t just make a group about global warming (500+ groups at last count), or social reform and wonder why, six months down the line “WTF, why isn’t this shit solved yet?” But if you’ve got an action plan, Facebook is a great tool for organization, especially locally. Almost nowhere else is there the potential to disseminate information as quickly amongst relevant people.
Now I just need to get on that action plan…
