The Litter Guy
May 16th, 2007 by AndyAs I was driving home from work today I saw a dude walking along Yonge with a sign on his back saying he was “The Litter Guy: doing my best to keep the city clean.” He added, “support in the form of money or food is welcome.” Environmentalism has officially pervaded every form of business, from huge corporations to the entrepreneurial homeless. I certainly applaud this guy’s actions, and I can only hope there is enough public support for people like this to allow cleaning the city to replace squeegeeing as the number one job for the down-and-out. Also, it will be fucking hilarious to watch the city’s maintenence unions decry vigilante litter pickers, as seems inevitable. Remember when they vetoed a plan to have apartment-bound seniors weed/tend public parks, as it threatened their jobs? Or just watch now, as the city goes after the “thieves” who take empties from blue boxes and return them for their deposit.

I saw this guy too on my last trip to downtown before heading to BC and I have mixed feelings about it. Sure I love that there are still people who believe in doing thins like this but then it also gets me thinking why do we have so much trash for this guy to pick up in the first place?
