“You had better fucking leave my fucking country”
August 26th, 2007 by AndySo I’m writing from Chicago (an amazing city with a lot to teach Toronto - more about this to come) and I just found it mindblowing how xenophobic the American border guard was on my way here. I wasn’t sure which American city I would be departing from, so I only bought a one way from Toronto to Detroit to start my trip. Anyway, this raised a lot of interest at the border, and I proceeded to listen to a ten minute lecture about the “fucking illegals taking over this country”, about all the crime, the poverty, the terrorism, that has resulted since “we started letting those fucking immigrants into our country”. It was quite the experience. At risk of sounding too repetitive (the whole lecture was the same three points repeated over and over), I’ll end by saying I got a great reaction when I told the guard I was an American citizen as well.

Haaahahahahaha… that rules so hard.
Does Chicago have a city-funded recycling program, yet? Last I heard, you had to pay money if you wanted to recycle anything. And I’m pretty sure you had to get the stuff to the depot, as well.
Or, that’s what I heard from someone who used to live in Chicago.
You’d better keep your promise to talk more about this!

More will come in the next few days but to answer your question, there was no recycling anywhere in the city that I saw… greenroofs, 85% ethanol fuel, and hybrid city vehicles everywhere, but every pop can and piece of paper was sent to the landfill… I don’t understand either.

Ironically, on my lengthy stopovers at the Chicago airport, they did have recycling bins that said “Chicago Recycles” on them. Weird that they wouldn’t do it in the city proper.
