Hello, Status Quo (and Disenfranchisement!)
October 11th, 2007 by AndrewSo despite all the saber-rattling, the Ontario election turned out exactly the same as the last one, with a Liberal majority. The Libs lost one seat, the PCs gained two, and the NDP gained three. Viva la revolución! Not like there was any reason to expect anything different.
Anyway, that’s all the time that need be devoted to that topic.
More importantly, Ontarians gave up their only chance to achieve some measure of democracy in our woefully outdated and unfair electoral system. It literally blows my mind that people were so vigorously opposed to any sort of proportional representation; the referendum failed by nearly 25%, the final breakdown being 64-36. I know I’m looking forward to the next century of continued two (and-a-half?) party politics.
In retrospect, though, there’s more than a little bit of irony in the outcome. All this while I trumpet the virtues of democracy, and yet when people are given the opportunity to embrace it in a democratic referendum, they’re completely disinterested. I hate people.
