An Inconvenient Truth and Activist Burnout

March 10th, 2007 by Andrew

It’s pretty easy to burn out on fighting for the big ideas, especially when you don’t see any tangible results or much visible support from those around you, which makes it doubly frustrating. And even when you are among likeminded people (say, at a rally) it’s often hard to see what, if anything, it really accomplishes.

What we need every now and then is a kick in the pants to remember how big a deal the causes you support really are. I saw An Inconvenient Truth over the summer, and while it didn’t really tell me much I didn’t already know, it’s a pretty excellent summary of the issues at hand (and has some sappy Al Gore moments for those of you who are less interested in the science). After I saw it (or after I went to the Worldchanging.com conference, or after I read something particularly shocking, or after I…) I was in psyched mode for a few days, but it gradually wears off. I saw it again the other day, and those disappearing glacier images worked their frightening magic yet again.

Moral of the story is, don’t be a burn out, get motivated, and watch the movie if you haven’t already seen it. It’s part of the reason why I’m finally getting off my ass and posting on here (even though no one will read it. Whee!)
